Chapter 16

The meteorological gods were smiling that morning because when Katie drew back her curtains, sunshine poured in through the bedroom window. If she pushed her nose right up against the glass, she could see the sea, its smooth surface reflecting the battalion of fluffy white clouds scudding through the cerulean sky on their continuous journey towards the Scilly Isles and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Seagulls ducked and dived between the waves in search of a tasty morsel for breakfast, their cries of delight upon making a successful catch causing a smile to tug at her lips.

While she waited for the kettle to boil, she cast her eyes over the picturesque view from the kitchen window at the back of her new home. It was such a shame the wooden glamping pods were empty because they were now surrounded by a resplendent tapestry of wildflowers, from bluebells to violets, from evening primrose to sea holly and pink campion. ‘Hi, Oscar. Fancy a trip to St Ives to check out the new seafood restaurant Jay’s always going on about?’

‘I’d love that – nothing better than good old Cornish fish and chips.’

‘Great, I’ll drive – see you in ten minutes.’

She spun on her heels and made her way back to the café to collect her coat and the keys to her super-shiny hire car that had so far only experienced a few short journeys, such as to the organic farm in the next village, to the soup kitchen, and to Edgemont Manor, none of which fell under the heading of leisurely. She gathered the straw beach bag she had brought back from Bali, tossed in a pair of flip-flops and on the spur of the moment added a swimming costume and beach towel – just in case. She thought of the joy that swimming had brought her over the years, of the medals and trophies she’d brought home from county championships and how her chosen sport had actually provided her with a focus when life as she knew it had imploded when she was twelve years old. Spending an hour in the pool didn’t
